Biography
James Pfander is the Owen L. Coon Professor of Law at Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law. His research and teaching centers on federal jurisdiction, government accountability, and civil procedure. His books include Hart & Wechsler’s The Federal Courts and the Federal System (8th ed. 2025) (with Baude, Goldsmith, Manning, and Tyler), Cases Without Controversies: Uncontested Adjudication in Article III Courts (Oxford Press 2021), and Civil Procedure: A Modern Approach (8th ed. 2024) (with Marcus, Redish, and Zambrano). He has published dozens law review articles in his fields of interest, including most recently a paper on federal official tort liability. An elected member of the American Law Institute, Pfander serves as an associate reporter on the ALI’s Restatement of Constitutional Torts. Pfander has lectured in England, Scotland, Portugal, Israel, the Czech Republic, Romania, Canada, and New Zealand and has chaired the federal courts and civil procedure sections of the Association of American Law Schools.
