David Huebner

Biography

Amb. Huebner has more than 25 years of experience in the field of international arbitration, first as an advocate and now as a neutral. He has handled more than 200 arbitrations across a wide array industry sectors, legal issues, and geographic regions, although he has particular subject matter expertise in technology, telecom, life sciences, entertainment, energy/infrastructure, and investment disputes. He is on the panels of the principal international and regional commercial arbitration institutions and is a U.S. appointee to the ICSID panel of arbitrators.

The Silicon Valley Arbitration and Mediation Center has named him to its “Tech List” of “the world’s most accomplished technology neutrals,” and the London-based Chartered Institute of Arbitrators has designated him a “Chartered Arbitrator,” its highest credential. He is a Fellow of the College of Commercial Arbitrators, a Distinguished Fellow of the Auckland University of Technology’s Faculty of Business and Law, and the Chair of the North America Branch of the Chartered Institute.

Amb. Huebner taught full-semester courses in international arbitration, intellectual property law, and international business transactions at the University of Southern California for a decade, taught international intellectual property law & policy at the University of California / Los Angeles, and has guest lectured elsewhere in the U.S., China, Germany, New Zealand, Singapore, Hong Kong, Canada, and Bermuda.

Prior to entering full-time neutrals practice, he was a long-time partner in international law firms including Coudert Brothers, where he served for a time as global chairman and CEO. He subsequently relocated to Shanghai to build a China practice for another large firm. From 2009 to 2014, he served as the American Ambassador to New Zealand and the Independent State of Samoa in the Obama Administration. He received various awards for his diplomatic work, including the U.S. Navy’s Distinguished Public Service medal, and the Smithsonian Institution took certain of his papers and artifacts into its permanent collection of American history. He earlier served as chair of the California Law Revision Commission for both Governors Gray Davis and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Currently resident in Los Angeles, Ambassador Huebner hears cases and conducts mediations worldwide. He was previously based for extended periods of his legal career in Tokyo, Shanghai, New York, and London.

He is a solicitor in England & Wales, member of the California, New York, and District of Columbia Bars, and graduate of Princeton University (summa cum laude) and Yale Law School.
