James R. Madison

Biography

James R. (Jim) Madison is a full-time ADR neutral, who serves as an arbitrator, mediator, dispute review board member. and expert in arbitrator ethics. In addition to technology, particularly life science or biotechnology, he specializes in construction, employment, and other business disputes.

Madison is a member of the American Arbitration Association Large Complex Case Commercial, Construction, Employment and International Arbitration Panels and the AAA Mediation Panel. He is a Fellow of the College of Commercial Arbitrators; a Tech List Panel Member of the Silicon Valley Arbitration and Mediation Center, and a Member of the National Academy of Distinguished Neutrals.

Madison is also a board member of the SVAMC; a board member and former president of the California Dispute Resolution Council, which advocates in California for fair and accessible ADR processes; a former chair of the California State Bar ADR Committee; and an instructor in trial advocacy at Stanford University Law School.

Madison has spoken frequently and written extensively about arbitration; most recently, he authored Chapter 15, “Arbitrator Ethics,” in CONSTRUCTION ADR (American Bar Association 2014) and was the principal author of Chapter 5, “Determining Jurisdiction and Arbitrability,” in the College of Commercial Arbitrators GUIDE TO BEST PRACTICES IN COMMERCIAL ARBITRATION (4th Edit. Juris 2017).

Madison received both a B.S. in Civil Engineering and an L.L.B. from Stanford.
