Tom Rubin

Tom Rubin has worked at the cutting edge of technology, and AI, for nearly 30 years, with experiences that span across government, the private sector, and the law. He was one of the first computer crimes prosecutors in the US as an Assistant US Attorney in the Southern District of New York in the 1990s and more recently served on the City of Seattle’s Innovation Advisory Council. He also taught a policy lab at Stanford Law School last year advising the city of Berkeley on ways to enhance privacy protections for its residents. After his service at the DOJ, Tom spent over 15 years at Microsoft, where he was Chief Intellectual Property Strategy Counsel and started working on issues involving machine learning in 1999. Since leaving Microsoft seven years ago, Tom has been Special Counsel at Quinn Emanuel, where he has counseled companies, from startups to international giants, on these issues. He has also taught a wide variety of courses at the law school related to AI, including a seminar on AI. He recently became a strategic advisor to OpenAI, one of the leading AI research and product companies in the world.
