Silvana Tapia Tapia

Silvana Tapia Tapia is assistant professor of socio-legal studies at the University of Azuay (Ecuador), where she lectures in Gender and Law, and Philosophical and Sociological Foundations of Law. She earned her PhD in socio-legal studies at the University of Kent (UK) in 2017 with a dissertation critiquing the “rights-based” penal approach adopted in Ecuador to criminalise violence against women. Her research interests lie at the intersections of feminist critiques of criminal justice and a decolonial approach to analysing law, more broadly. She has published in well-established journals such as Feminist Legal Studies and Feminist Theory and is currently finalising a monograph on the history of legal reform on violence against women in Ecuador (Routledge Social Justice Series). In 2019 she was awarded a vanguard early career scholar grant from the University of Birmingham. Her current work focuses on foregrounding Latin American decolonial critiques of criminal justice and the human rights-based regulation of gender violence.
