Administrative Checklist

We haven’t left much free time during Orientation, but if you find yourself with some open time, here are a few items to check off your to-do list.

Meet your classmates!
Check out the Meet Your Classmates (MYC) guide online and get to know your classmates. You can sort by year (it includes some of the upper class students). If you haven’t already, you can still submit your information here.

Have your photo taken for the SLS ‘Who’s Who’ directory
Location:
Room 180
The ‘Who’s Who’ is the SLS photo directory of all students, faculty, and staff. We distribute hard copies to everyone within the SLS community (usually in October). For those of you who submitted your photo for ‘Meet Your Classmates,’ no need to do this. If you can’t make it to this session, don’t worry. Connect with one of us in Student Affairs and we will be happy to help.

Wed, Aug. 28           4:00-5:00 pm

Get your photo ID
Location: Tresidder Union
If you did not get your Stanford ID in your housing packet, take a walk over to Tresidder Union to visit the ID Card Office and pick up your photo ID.

Take a tour of the Robert Crown Law Library
Location: Library Front Door
Take a self-guided, 20-minute audio tour of the library. Audio tours are required for 1Ls and recommended for LLM/SPILS students. Audio tours are available during the hours below. LLM/SPILS students also have the option to sign up for a personal tour of the library.

Aug. 30-Sept. 6         9:00 – 4:30 pm        Mondays through Fridays (except Labor Day, Sept. 2)

Buy books
Location: Stanford Bookstore
Visit the bookstore to purchase your books and supplies. Your booklist is available on the Registrar’s website. You aren’t required to buy books at the bookstore, of course. Use your favorite online retailer if you’d like. Just be sure you get the correct edition of your casebooks.

Take a campus or law school tour
Meet @ Neukom Rotunda
Orientation Volunteers will lead these 30-minute tours of the Stanford Law buildings, and 1-hour tours of campus. Meet at the Neukom Building rotunda (i.e.: the spiral staircase).

  • SLS Tour          Tues, Aug. 27               2:00 pm
  • Campus Tour   Wed, Aug. 28              4:45 pm
  • SLS Tour           Wed, Aug. 28              4:45 pm
  • Campus Tour  Thurs, Aug. 29             4:45 pm
  • SLS Tour          Thurs, Aug. 29            4:15 pm

Get assistance from IT
Location: Room 260 Crown Bldg.
We’ve included a handout in your Orientation packet with answers to the most common IT requests. The IT folks will be on hand to help you configure your laptop, connect to printers, and answer any questions you may have.

Familiarize yourself with Canvas and check for reading assignments
In addition to checking Canvas, be sure to check your mailbox in the basement for Legal Research and Writing (LRW) readings for Orientation week.

Find your mailbox and claim a locker
Every student is assigned a mailbox, and can sign up to use a locker if needed. You can find your mailbox in the basement hallway that connects the Crown building to the classroom building. To get a locker, a sign up sheet is located near in the classroom building, on the basement level near the elevator.  You will have to supply your own lock, so put that on your shopping list (the bookstore has them in stock).

Record your name in NameCoach
Stanford utilizes NameCoach to record your audio pronunciation, preferred name, and pronouns. We encourage you to log in to Axess, locate the ‘NameCoach’ link under the STUDENT tab, and follow the prompts to enter your information. Your faculty will then have access to that information through their class roster in Axess.

Take a break!
Consult the 2019-2020 SLA RedGuide to find a nearby coffee shop (Coupa is the closest) and take a breather. We have packed this week with activities, so be sure to give yourself time to decompress.
