Jin-Hee Catherine Lee ’23

Biography

Jin-Hee Catherine Lee is an M.S. candidate in Computer Science with focus in Human-Computer Interaction who double majored in Music (for Vocal Performance) and Symbolic Systems (for HCI) as an undergraduate student. At the root of her work across technology and music is her passion for people and connection.

In the technical realm, Jin-Hee applies her background in HCI to product management, having interned with Cloudflare on both the API management team and the TLS/SSL team. She also recently joined the expert team at Daiki, where she examines the rapidly growing field of artificial intelligence and quantum with a human-focused lens.

Coming from a family of passionate educators, Jin-Hee loves teaching and has taught as a student of the Computer Science department for nearly 4 years, starting as a section leader in the CS198 program and now working as a graduate course assistant throughout the year.

Throughout her time at Stanford, Jin-Hee has cultivated her love for performance and classical vocal arts. A coloratura soprano. Jin-Hee studies voice with Kathryne Jennings and coaches with Steven Lightburn. On campus, she sings first soprano in the Stanford Chamber Chorale and performs in operas and musicals. Recent roles in Stanford productions include Susanna in Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro (abridged), Rosalinde in Strauss II’s Die Fledermaus (English), and Johanna in Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd. She has served as the vocal director for several student productions, including Spelling Bee and Next to Normal. Jin-Hee is also an alumnus of the R&B a cappella group Everyday People and enjoys songwriting in her free time.

Last year, Jin-Hee placed 1st in her category at both the SFBAC NATS Musical Theater Competition and the Classical Competition. This last summer, Jin-Hee studied the bel canto style and tradition as a student of Jane Klaviter at the Bel Canto Institute in Florence, then with Glenn Morton as an artist at Classic Lyric Arts in Novafeltria.

Jin-Hee has also performed as a soloist with the Stanford Chamber Chorale: last year, she sang the soprano solo in excerpts from Mozart’s Requiem as part of NPR’s “What Makes it Great?” with Rob Kapilow. In the spring, she looks forward to performing as the soprano soloist in Mozart’s Coronation Mass with the Stanford Symphonic Chorus and Orchestra.
