Nuno Garoupa

Biography

Nuno Garoupa is Professor of Law and Faculty Director of Graduate Studies at the Antonin Scalia Law School, George Mason University, where he previously served as Associate Dean for Research and Faculty Development (2018–2023). Before joining George Mason, he held faculty appointments at Texas A&M University School of Law, University of Illinois College of Law, Universidade Nova de Lisboa, and Universitat Pompeu Fabra. A leading scholar in law and economics, his research focuses on comparative legal institutions, judicial behavior, empirical legal studies, constitutional design, and the economics of courts and judicial governance. His work frequently combines formal institutional analysis with empirical methods, addressing topics such as judicial councils, constitutional adjudication, legal origins, judicial independence, foreign judges, and the political economy of legal reform. He has also published extensively on the economics of procedural law, legal development, and comparative judicial politics. Professor Garoupa currently serves as President of the European Association of Law and Economics (2023–2026).
