Naomi R. Cahn

Biography

Naomi Cahn is an expert in family law, trusts and estates, feminist jurisprudence, reproductive technology, and aging and the law. She joined the University of Virginia School of Law faculty in 2020 and serves as co-director of UVA Law’s Family Law Center. Prior to this role, she taught at George Washington University Law School, where she twice served as associate dean. Cahn is a co-author of casebooks in both family law and trusts and estates, and her scholarship examines the intersections among family law, property and inheritance systems, gender equality, and changing family structures.

Cahn is the author or editor of numerous academic and trade books, including Red Families v. Blue Families (with June Carbone), Homeward Bound (with Amy Ziettlow), Unequal Family Lives (co-edited with Brad Wilcox and others), Fair Shake: Women and the Fight to Build a Just Economy (with June Carbone and Nancy Levit), and Hot Flash: How the Law Ignores Menopause and What We Can Do About It (with Emily Gold Waldman and Bridget J. Crawford). Her work has appeared in major outlets such as The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, and The New Yorker, and she regularly contributes commentary on gender equity to the Forbes Leadership Channel. Before entering academia, she practiced law with Hogan Lovells in Washington, D.C., and with Community Legal Services in Philadelphia.
