In November 2011, Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers began serving as a United States District Court Judge for the Northern District of California after receiving her commission from President Barack Obama. She is the first woman of Mexican-American heritage to occupy that seat. Prior to her role on the federal bench, she served as a Superior Court Judge for the State of California in Alameda County and before that was an equity partner for the law firm of Cooley LLP.

In her capacity as both a state and federal judge, she has presided over thousands of civil and criminal cases and over 60 trials, including class action trials. Her cases include a broad range of categories including patent, antitrust, intellectual property, administrative, environmental, employment, ERISA, securities, civil rights, and general business to name a few. Recently, she presided over the highly publicized antitrust action between Epic Games, Inc. and Apple, Inc.

She currently chairs the Northern District’s Committee charged with administering the Criminal Justice Act as it relates to indigent defense and has sat by designation on the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. In 2010, she was elected as the first state court judge to the Council of the American Law Institute. She has worked on projects related to Privacy, Employment, Unjust Enrichment, and Copyright. She also chaired the Membership Committee for six years.

Judge Gonzalez Rogers was born and raised in Texas. She graduated cum laude from Princeton University and received her J.D. from the University of Texas, Austin after completing her final year of classes at the University of California, Berkeley School of Law.

In addition to her judicial duties, Judge Gonzalez Rogers served on the Board of Trustees for Princeton University and numerous Latinx organizations. She currently serves as the Secretary-Treasurer for both the Ninth Circuit District Judges Association and for the Northern District’s Historical Society and serves as a member of the Board of the Northern District Chapter of the Association of Business Trial Lawyers.
