Luiz Peroba is a partner at Pinheiro Neto Advogados based in São Paulo, Brazil and focuses his practice on Brazilian tax matters.  Peroba advises many U.S.-based tech companies in their activities in Brazil and also represent them in legal disputes and controversy resolution with Brazilian tax authorities, with focus on the taxation of digital economy.

In his litigation practice, he has represented one of Brazil’s largest telecom companies in obtaining a favorable ruling by the Brazilian Supreme Court in a landmark case that established the absence of Brazilian VAT taxation in services provided in connection with telecom, thereby also shedding a $1 billion dollar risk from her client’s balance sheet.  He also represented one of Brazil’s largest television network in securing a $400 million favorable award from the Brazilian Administrative Tax Court (CARF) in dispute over payment rights.

Luiz Peroba is regarded as the tax counsel of choice by several major U.S.-based tech companies operating in Brazil and in that capacity, he played a central role in structuring tax efficient payment arrangements among such companies and their parent entities in the U.S.

He has experience in counseling related to several digital activities including collaborative social networks, online marketplaces, platforms for sharing economy, subscription of services, cloud computing solutions, software development and licensing, online placement of advertisement etc.

Luiz Peroba received a Bachelor degree from Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo (PUC/SP), a specialization from the New York University (NYU), and worked as an international associate with Bryan Cave LLP in NY.  Peroba is a Partner with Pinheiro Neto Advogados since 2005, a Director on Brazil-based associations that represent tech companies such as Associação Brasileira do Direito da Informação e Telecomunicações (ABDI) and Associação Brasileira de Direito Financeiro (ABDF), and a visiting Professor of Law at Fundação Getúlio Vargas (FGV Direito).
