Angela Dunning

Biography

Angela Dunning is a partner at Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP in its Bay Area offices. Angela has over 20 years’ experience litigating copyright, trademark, trade secrets, right of publicity, and unfair competition/false advertising cases, as well as other complex commercial disputes, for major global companies. She has tried numerous cases to a jury verdict and has substantial experience in the federal appellate courts, including successful arguments before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in precedent-setting IP cases such as Elliott v. Google and Naruto v. Slater (the “Monkey Selfie” copyright case).  Angela is also leader in the bar with respect to generative artificial intelligence.  She is currently defending developers of AI art and language models against putative copyright class actions challenging the development, training, and output of those models.  In 2008, Angela served as an assistant district attorney for the City and County of San Francisco under then-District Attorney Kamala Harris. She teaches trademark law at UC Berkeley School of Law.
