Biography
Drawing on fifteen years of experience leading high-stakes securities matters as a lawyer in defense, regulatory, and in-house roles, Walker Newell is one of the leaders of the D&O insurance practice at Gallagher (one of the world’s largest insurance brokers).
Before entering the insurance industry, Walker served as senior counsel in the SEC’s Division of Enforcement in San Francisco, where he led several groundbreaking matters. He also has years of experience advising and defending public and private companies, board members, founders, and senior executives in securities litigation and investigations as outside counsel with Cooley and Wilson Sonsini and as in-house counsel with Robinhood Markets (Nasdaq: HOOD).
Walker is frequently quoted in national publications, including Reuters, Bloomberg, and the Financial Times’ Agenda. He regularly speaks to forums across the country on topics at the intersection of insurance, litigation, capital markets, and government regulation.
Early in his career, Walker served as a law clerk on the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California and on the Alaska State Supreme Court. Walker earned his juris doctorate from Columbia Law School as a James Kent Scholar (high honors) and his bachelor’s degree from the University of California, San Diego. He is a member of the California Bar and holds the CIPP/US privacy law certification.
