Giovanni Sartor

Giovanni Sartor is full professor in legal informatics at the University of Bologna and part-time professor in Legal informatics and Legal Theory at the European University Institute of Florence. After graduating cum laude at the University of Bologna, he obtained a PhD at the European University Institute. He has been President of the International Association for Artificial Intelligence and Law.

He holds an ERC-advanced grant for the project CompuLaw (2019 – 2025) and is member of the ERC Scientific Board.    He is co-director of Summer Schools on “Artificial Intelligence and Law” e on “Law and Logic”.and visiting professor at Bocconi (Milan),  Catolica (Lisbon) and Surrey (London).  He is co-director of the “Artificial intelligence and Law journal” and co-editor of the “Ratio Juris” Journal.

His research interests include legal theory, legal philosophy, computational logic, argumentation theory, modal and deontic logics, logic programming, multiagent systems, Internet law, data protection, consumer protection, aviation law, human and fundamental rights. A large part of this work focuses on the interface between legal theory, computational logic and argumentation, where he has studied, in particular:  formal models of legal arguments, value- and case-based reasoning, legal interpretation, deontic and normative positions. We has addressed the connection between legal and computational argumentation in “Legal Reasoning: A Cognitive Approach to the Law” (Springer, 2005) and “Statutory Interpretation. Pragmatics and Argumentation” (CUP, 2021).
