We will address methods to navigate student challenges to competency in the classroom. Periodically, Latina professors may encounter hostility from certain segments of the student population who question her expertise. This situation usually arises in classrooms with majority student populations or with particularly vocal student critics. When this occurs, the classroom atmosphere quickly becomes tense and unsuited to meaningful learning. This session will discuss teaching techniques to diffuse student hostility, as well as alternative strategies to handle the situation, such as politicking for support from colleagues.
