Room 4: Learning with and from Our Clients: Humanizing Approaches When Working with Adolescents

Beginning with a brief history of the U.S. juvenile legal system, we’ll explore how racial and ethnic disparities have persisted across time and how it continues to shape the experiences of adolescents caught in the juvenile legal system. Relatedly, we’ll explore the origins of social histories and how they can be leveraged as tools towards (re)humanization and justice. The session will offer practical tools for approaching the art of writing social histories from how we engage young people, the questions we ask, research we draw on, and the stories we tell. As part of the session, participants will also be invited to share their experiences and expertise as part of a collaborative learning environment.
