Incorporating Race into Your Advocacy

There is more to raising race than the RJA. A panel of experts will explore the different ways we can incorporate race into our client centered representation, with our defense teams, in our law and motion practice, and throughout our advocacy, both in and outside the courtroom. Panelists will cover strategies for defenders to recognize and mitigate implicit biases, the application of concepts like the “Reasonable Black Child” in search and seizure motions, challenging discriminatory language, and the strategic use of expert testimony in addressing racial issues, thereby restoring trust in the legal system and improving advocacy for minority youth in juvenile justice proceedings.
