In the United States, LGBTQ+ youth, predominantly youth of color, face distinct harms in the juvenile justice systems which much like the criminal justice system, particularly target LGBTQ+ youth and youth of color due to systemic racism, sexism, homophobia and transphobia. Other social drivers such as family acceptance, poverty and lack of community resources further contribute to the overrepresentation of LGBTQ+ youth and youth of color in these systems.

This presentation will discuss the disparities LGBTQ+ youth face in the juvenile justice system, how to discuss SOGIE with youth clients and highlight policy advocacy NCLR has engaged in on behalf of LGBTQ+ youth and youth of color. In addition, this presentation will share some LGBTQ+ community resources aimed at better supporting LGBTQ+ youth and their families.
