Jakeya Caruthers

Jakeya Caruthers is Associate Director of the Program in African & African-American Studies at Stanford University where she also earned her PhD in Anthropology of Education. Her research interests include black feminisms; theories of gender, sexuality, and embodiment; popular culture, visual culture, and media representation; and narratives of crisis and austerity. Some of her analytic musings can be found on The Feminist Wire and the Journal of Popular Music Studies, as well as in the classroom where she teaches courses on Black Feminist Theory, Black Women Artists and 20th Century Visual Culture, and Queer Afrofuturism.  Before and throughout her studies, Jakeya has been involved with a number of organizations working toward social and economic justice including Survived & Punished, Highlander Research and Education Center, and the Jubilee USA Network.
