This panel will focus on the intersection between gendered violence and systemic oppression. Societal power dynamics play a powerful role in gendered violence, from who is more likely to be a survivor to who is likely thought of as a perpetrator to which survivors receive culturally appropriate support. In the U.S., there is a history of white men utilizing sexual assault to exert control over women, particularly women of color, and using accusations of sexual assault to lynch men of color. Given this backdrop, practitioners and activists will discuss methods to respond to gendered violence that address the intersectional issues at play and do not exacerbate racial disparities in the criminal justice system.
