Cecily Mak

Cecily Mak is the Chief Revenue Officer and General Counsel at Flipboard, Inc.  In her capacity as CRO, she oversees the Direct Sales, Sales Strategy, Business Development, Publisher Relations, and Editorial Strategy teams. As GC, she oversees all of the company’s legal matters, including those related to corporate policies and programs, governance, fundraising, securities law, M&A, commercial agreements and transactions, litigation, intellectual property development and licensing strategies.

Before joining Flipboard, Cecily served as Senior Vice President and General Counsel to Rhapsody International Inc., a joint venture between Viacom International and RealNetworks, Inc. with investment from Best Buy Stores, Inc. and Universal Music Group.  While at Rhapsody Cecily played a key role in content relations and management, launched the company’s first patent mining program, lead the acquisition of the company’s largest domestic competitor, and played a leadership role in the company’s international expansion.  Before Rhapsody, Cecily was with the global in-house legal team at RealNetworks, Inc. and an associate at Shartsis Friese, LLP.  Cecily was recently named a “Woman Leader in Tech Law” by The Recorder, has been honored by Digital Media Wire as one of their “25 Executives to Watch in Digital Entertainment,” and was nominated as one of Billboard Magazine’s Women in Music while at Rhapsody.  In addition to publishing a book on digital content licensing, she is a regular contributor to a range of magazines, legal periodicals and book releases.

Cecily serves as an advisory board member of several start-ups and international organizations including Loudr, Inc., Wisdom Labs, Inc., The World Economic Forum’s Media Industry Partnership Programme, Digital Entertainment World, and Open Aura, Inc.  She has been teaching Digital Media Law at the University of California Hastings College of the Law since 2006 and spends a considerable amount of time mentoring young entrepreneurs, junior lawyers, and other emerging talent.  Her greatest joy and pride derives from her two young sons whom she and her husband are raising with a good dose of adventure, travel and outdoor time, just north of San Francisco.
