Is Law’s Moat Evaporating?: Implications of Recent NLP Breakthroughs

In October of 2018, Google open-sourced BERT, a new framework for the subfield of AI focused on human language (natural language processing). Immediately heralded as a major breakthrough, BERT and its progeny present substantial opportunities – and potential challenges – for the legal profession. This panel will familiarize the audience with the science behind BERT, explore some of the ways it is already being used to improve the legal profession, and discuss the implications of where NLP might go next.
