Biography
Max Sills has a diverse work experience in legal and advisory roles. Max started their career as a Law Clerk at the World Intellectual Property Organization, United Nations, and later served as a Law Clerk at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, focusing on risk strategy and financial innovation.
Max then became an Attorney Manager at Google, where they managed a team responsible for open source legal matters, corporate governance for open source foundations, and standards strategy. Max also played a key role in structuring and negotiating commercial partnerships and led licensing diligence for acquisitions and divestitures.
After their time at Google, Max worked as a Software Engineer and Attorney at Leap Motion, where they co-managed the patent portfolio, led the software licensing program, and contributed to software architecture and metrics teams.
Max later joined the Crypto Open Patent Alliance as their General Manager, overseeing the alliance’s efforts in promoting open patents in the crypto space. Max also served as Counsel at Block, where they led the Crypto Open Patent Alliance on cross-appointment and handled legal issues related to open partnerships and IP licensing.
Max’s experience also includes serving as a Board Member at LedgerDomain and working as an Advisor at Midjourney.
Currently, Max is the Owner of Open Advisory Services, a boutique firm specializing in fixed fee, fractional general counsel services for small and medium companies. They also offer patent analytics, IP strategy, and open source program development and review for larger companies, with a focus on AI and crypto.

Max Sills completed their education with a Doctor of Law (J.D.) degree from Vanderbilt University Law School, which they attended from 2010 to 2013. Prior to that, they pursued a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in Mathematics and Cognitive Science at Case Western Reserve University from 2006 to 2010. Max also attended Culver Military Academy from 2002 to 2006. Additionally, they acquired a certification as a Member of the California Bar in January 2014.
